Brief History of Magnolia
The City of Magnolia has grown from its humble settler town from the 1840's to a successful area of commerce. The city first started in the timber industry and was originally named Mink's Prairie (after Joseph Mink an early settler) and then renamed "Mink" by 1850. The name finally became Magnolia, and with the new I & GN Railroad, the community started to grow with new residents, churches, and business. It wasn't until 1915 that the population finally grew to 150 with many of its citizens working for the Grogan-Cochran Sawmill. The railroad played an important part of its growth because it helped workers get around and helped in the transfer of lumber. The original train depot has been fully restored and currently stands as a Texas historical landmark.
